Why Your Cover Matters More Than You Think

A deteriorating hot tub or swim spa cover doesn't just look bad — it actively works against you. As foam absorbs water over time, the cover becomes heavier, loses its insulating ability, and forces your heater to run far longer than it should. In Canmore's cold climate, that translates directly into inflated electricity costs and unnecessary wear on your spa equipment.

Replacing your cover at the right time is one of the most cost-effective maintenance decisions you can make. And choosing the right cover for your specific tub, climate, and usage pattern makes all the difference.

The Alpine Classic Series

All Alpine covers are built with aluminum C-channel reinforcement for structural strength, and feature full-length closed-cell foam baffle gaskets that seal and insulate the entire center hinge — a critical detail for year-round performance in cold climates.

Vapor Barrier Upgrades

A quality vapor barrier protects your foam core from moisture absorption — the number one cause of premature cover failure. Alpine covers come standard with a 4-mil polyethylene barrier, with upgrades available in:

  • 6-mil
  • 8-mil
  • 10-mil (6-mil + 4-mil double layer)
  • 12-mil (6-mil + 6-mil double layer)
  • 14-mil (8-mil + 6-mil double layer)

For Canmore's climate, we strongly recommend a minimum 8-mil barrier upgrade to maximize the lifespan of your cover.

Handle Options

Alpine now offers three handle styles to suit your setup:

  • Integrated Handle — Modern design, built directly into the cover at standard positions
  • Rubber Handle — Traditional, durable grip option
  • Legacy Handle — Used when custom handle placement is required

Inside handles are also available — a useful addition if you use a standard cover lifter. They allow you to pull the cover closed from inside the tub without straining the baffle or liner.

Skirt Modifications

Custom skirt splitting is available for tubs with unique cabinet configurations. Alpine can split the skirt at the end of the radius or at the center of the radius to accommodate hinges, steps, or other obstructions.

Swim Spa Covers

Swim spa covers are available as a separate specialty line. Given the larger surface area involved, proper measurement and appropriate foam thickness are especially important. Call Western Tub & Pool to discuss the right configuration for your swim spa.

Cover Lifters — Protect Your Investment, Save Your Back

A cover lifter isn't just a convenience. It extends the life of your cover by preventing dragging, scraping, and ground contact — all of which cause premature wear. It also makes the daily routine of using your hot tub far more enjoyable, especially in winter when covers are heavier from snow load.

Western Tub & Pool supplies a range of lifter styles to suit different tub configurations and personal preferences:

Manual Pivot Lifters

An affordable, reliable option for most standard hot tubs. These pivot-style lifters use aluminum and reinforced components to swing the cover back behind the tub cleanly.

Hydraulic Lifters

Ideal if your cover is especially heavy, or if you simply want effortless, one-person operation. Gas spring mechanisms do the heavy lifting for you, with smooth, controlled movement.

Undermount Systems

Designed for a clean, streamlined look. The hardware mounts beneath the cabinet, keeping the exterior of your spa unobstructed and maintaining a polished aesthetic.

Roller Shelf Systems

Roll your cover on and off with minimal effort — a great option for users who prefer a sliding motion over a pivot lift.

Not sure which lifter suits your setup? Call us at 403-383-5567 and we'll help you choose the right one.

How to Measure Your Hot Tub for a Replacement Cover

If you'd prefer to measure your own tub, here are the key guidelines:

  • Measure in inches only
  • Measure the acrylic shell at its widest points — typically where the outer edges meet the cabinet
  • Hold your measuring tape flat, extending it slightly past the top edge of the acrylic
  • Note your corner radius — if corners are not square, measure the radius carefully (a radius template can help)
  • Common hot tub shapes include rectangle, square, octagon, octagon-rectangle, 5-sided, and round — identify yours before measuring

Pro tip: If your old cover fit properly, you can use it as your measuring reference. That said, even small errors in measurement can result in a poor fit. When in doubt, have us come and measure for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know when it's time to replace my hot tub cover?

If your cover feels significantly heavier than it used to, struggles to retain heat, has visible cracks or tears in the vinyl, or smells musty, it's time for a replacement. Waterlogged foam loses most of its insulating value and will noticeably increase your energy costs.

What foam density and thickness is right for Canmore's climate?

Given the cold winters and heavy snow loads in the Canadian Rockies, we generally recommend a minimum of a 5"–3" tapered Silver cover (R-16) for year-round use, or a Gold line cover for maximum insulation and durability. For areas with very heavy snowfall, the 6"–4" Silver (R-20) is an excellent choice.

Do you carry covers for swim spas as well as hot tubs?

Yes. Alpine manufactures a dedicated swim spa cover line. Swim spa covers have unique sizing and structural requirements — contact us to discuss the right option for your unit.

Can you remove and dispose of my old cover?

Absolutely. Old cover removal is available as part of our delivery and installation service. Just let us know when you call.

Do you offer cover lifters to go with the new cover?

Yes. We supply a range of lifter types — manual pivot, hydraulic, undermount, and roller shelf systems. We can help you select the right lifter for your tub and budget when you call.

How long does it take to get a new cover?

Lead times vary depending on the model and any custom options selected. Contact us at 403-383-5567 for current availability and estimated delivery times.

Do you serve areas outside of Canmore?

We serve Canmore and the surrounding area. Call us to confirm service availability for your location.
